The house site is situated in the back dune at Piha on Auckland’s west coast, which experiences typical coastal weather patterns of violent winter storms and searing summer heat.
Back dunes are fairly stable as they merge into the coastal forest, however, they are still susceptible to sand accretion and erosion.Careful consideration was given to produce a design that would quickly re-establish an environment that could sustain itself and mitigate erosion.
To this end local carex species and groundcovers form the base of the design, binding the sand and providing shade for the roots of the more structural species to become established. These species also keep to the broader design concept of an open grass glade as are often found within the local coastal forest.
Woody shrubs and herbaceous plants add texture and form along with seasonal flowers and accents of hardy ferns.
Natural planting design reflects the solitude, restoration and retreat of this beautiful landscape.
